Righteousness vs. Self-Righteousness
February 3, 2008
Text: Luke 18:9-14
(
Read Luke 18:9-14)   (Listen to Luke 18:9-14)

What kind of rules/standards do you set for yourself? List a few.

Do you feel good about yourself when you meet your own expectations?

What kind of rules or expectations do you set for others? (your spouse, your family, your pastor, others in your community/church)

How do you feel when others don’t meet your expectations?

Self-Righteousness and True Righteousness
Pastor R and Pastor Dan

 Two blocks to Compassion:
· Judgmentalism
· Self-righteousness

“We don’t want to see ourselves as God sees us so we make ourselves right by our own efforts” (bad idea)

Pharisees: viewed themselves as “one up” and were “confident of their own righteousness” (Luke 18: 9)

Self-righteousness comes from our attempts to earn some one’s favor to gain attention to ourselves.

Self-righteousness fails to see our own sin (blind spot) and we view ourselves as superior to others.

I See Jesus: Knowing the Father (Parable of the Prodical Son)

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Last week we looked at the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37) to learn how that God wants us to love with a sacrificial love that reflects His love.

This week we will look at the parable of the Prodigal Son and the Lost Older Brother…from the Perspective of the FATHER. (Text: Luke 15:11-32)
(
Read Luke 15:11-32)   (Listen to Luke 15:11-32)

Questions for small group or family discussion:

-         What is your view of our heavenly Father? Can you list some of His attributes?

-         Do your circumstances change the way that you view the Father?

-         Who do you most relate to in this story? The Father? The Prodigal? The Returning Prodigal? The Older Brother? Those that celebrated with the Father? WHY?

Text: Luke 10:27
(Read Luke 10:29-37)  (Listen to Luke 10:29-37)

He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Last week we began our series on “I See Jesus” by looking at Jesus showing compassion. This week we will hear His teaching on compassion through the story of the Good Samaritan – Luke 10:29-37.Questions for small group or family discussion:

  • What does it mean to love others?
  • Who do you consider your “neighbors”?
  • Do you have healthy boundaries when showing compassion?  What do they look like?
  • Are you loving others the way Jesus would love them? How does that look?

As you think on these questions, discuss the lesson with your small group. Please share with us what God is teaching you. How you are seeing Jesus and loving like Him? We want to hear it!

Message (Mp3 audio):

God wants us to love with a sacrificial love that reflects His love!

We can only love our neighbor “as ourselves”  IF we love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind.

Who is your neighbor?

I See Jesus: Compassion for the Widow of Nain

I See Jesus Series
Compassion:   Compassion for the Widow of Nain
Pastor R. Greene
Text:  Luke 7:11 – 13 (view text) (hear audio)

Background:  Jesus is walking to Nain with his disciples and a large crowd when he meets a funeral procession.   The dead person is the only son of a widowed woman.  This loss is particularly significant in this culture as the husband or son is the sole means of support for this widow.   First:  Jesus LOOKED.   He was focused on the widow and her pain,  He was paying attention to the situation around him.  He LOOKED and SAW her grief and pain and “his heart went out to her”.   Do we “see” the needs around us?
Are we “looking” as Jesus looked?

Compassion:  a feeling evoked by the situation of another accompanied by a desire to help. (action)
