Jesus’ Ministry Mindset

Elder Jim Mackey
Text: Various. See below.

 - How do you relate to people that are different than you?

- Are there times you turn off your “ministry radar”? What are some of those times or scenarios when you are not looking to serve others?

- How do you share your faith in conversation?

- Think of a time when someone shared the truth in love to you.

Philippians 2:5-7

5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,

7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

Good Anger

Text: (See below.)

Midweek Moment

·         Anger is a normal human emotion.

·         God given means of protecting ourselves, for setting boundaries.

·         Jesus had an emotional life (He cleared out the temple).

·         Anger is a misunderstood emotion. We don’t do anger well in the church. Most of us have not seen anger done well and have come to associate anger with destruction.

Two Questions

    1. What do we get angry about?
              “CHRISTIANS DON’T GET ANGRY”

·         We don’t get our way
·         We are frustrated
·
We have been hurt
·
We are angry at someone else

What kind of rules/standards do you set for yourself? List a few.

Do you feel good about yourself when you meet your own expectations?

What kind of rules or expectations do you set for others? (your spouse, your family, your pastor, others in your community/church)

How do you feel when others don’t meet your expectations?

Self-Righteousness and True Righteousness
Pastor R and Pastor Dan

 Two blocks to Compassion:
· Judgmentalism
· Self-righteousness

“We don’t want to see ourselves as God sees us so we make ourselves right by our own efforts” (bad idea)

Pharisees: viewed themselves as “one up” and were “confident of their own righteousness” (Luke 18: 9)

Self-righteousness comes from our attempts to earn some one’s favor to gain attention to ourselves.

Self-righteousness fails to see our own sin (blind spot) and we view ourselves as superior to others.

I See Jesus: Knowing the Father (Parable of the Prodical Son)

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Last week we looked at the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37) to learn how that God wants us to love with a sacrificial love that reflects His love.

This week we will look at the parable of the Prodigal Son and the Lost Older Brother…from the Perspective of the FATHER. (Text: Luke 15:11-32)
(
Read Luke 15:11-32)   (Listen to Luke 15:11-32)

Questions for small group or family discussion:

-         What is your view of our heavenly Father? Can you list some of His attributes?

-         Do your circumstances change the way that you view the Father?

-         Who do you most relate to in this story? The Father? The Prodigal? The Returning Prodigal? The Older Brother? Those that celebrated with the Father? WHY?
